Rope Access Levels Explained — From Level 1 to Level 3
IRATA offers a three-level path from basic rope access skills to advanced rigging and supervision, ensuring safe, competent progression for technicians and reliable standards for employers.
IRATA certification remains the global benchmark for rope access competence. The IRATA system is structured across three levels, each reflecting a specific set of skills, responsibilities, and experience requirements. Understanding these levels helps technicians plan their career progression and ensures employers know what capability each level brings to a project.
IRATA Level 1 — Entry-Level Technician
Level 1 is the starting point for all rope access professionals. It provides the foundations for safe movement on ropes, equipment handling, and work positioning under supervision.
A Level 1 technician is trained to:
- Use basic rope access equipment
- Perform simple rescues under instruction
- Operate under the direct supervision of a Level 3
- Understand safe working procedures and basic rigging principles
Requirements:
- You must be over the age of 18, and medically fit to work at heights.
- No prior experience needed
- 5-day IRATA training course
- External assessment by an IRATA-certified assessor
Level 1 technicians form the backbone of rope access teams and support day-to-day operational tasks.
IRATA Level 2 — Experienced Technician
Level 2 is an intermediate qualification for technicians who have gained sufficient field experience and are ready for more technical responsibilities.
A Level 2 technician is trained to:
- Conduct advanced rigging
- Perform more complex rescues
- Lead small teams when supervised by a Level 3
- Manage a broader range of work situations
Requirements:
- Minimum 1,000 logged hours as Level 1
- Minimum 12 months of operational experience
- 5 days of Level 2 training
- IRATA assessment
Level 2 demonstrates that a technician is competent in both rope access movement and rigging strategy, and can support the Level 3 in planning work systems.
IRATA Level 3 — Supervisor
Level 3 is the highest tier of IRATA certification and enables technicians to take full responsibility for planning, supervising, and managing rope access operations.
A Level 3 technician is trained to:
- Design and install complex rigging systems
- Conduct risk assessments and rescue planning
- Supervise entire rope access teams
- Lead emergency procedures and ensure compliance
- Sign off permits, method statements, and logbooks
Requirements:
- Minimum 1,000 logged hours at Level 2
- Minimum 12 months of Level 2 experience
- High competency in rigging, rescue, and safety systems
- IRATA Level 3 assessment
Level 3 certification indicates a high level of technical competence, leadership ability, and responsibility for safety.
The IRATA Pathway and Career Development
The IRATA framework is structured to ensure that skill progression is linked to real operational experience. Each level builds on the one before it, ensuring technicians are competent, safe, and capable of contributing effectively on-site.
For technicians, the pathway offers:
- Clear career progression
- International mobility
- Access to a growing job market
- Opportunity to specialise in industrial, offshore, or inspection work
For employers, the levels provide:
- Assurance of competence
- Standardized safety practices
- Consistent operational quality
