A step-by-step guide on how to become a rope access technician

Check the entry requirements

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, and should be physically fit and unaffected by any disability or medical condition that may prevent them from working safely.
  • Candidates are required to provide a declaration that they do not have any known medical disabilities or contraindications that may prevent them from working safely. If a candidate has a contra-indicated condition, he/she shall obtain a medical certificate before commencing any rope access activities.
  • Candidates should consider their experience carefully before attempting to progress to a higher level. Candidates without appropriate competence, adequate pre-assessment training and knowledge of the syllabus are unlikely to meet the requirements.

SGB Cape Rope Access offers the following industrial rope access training courses :

  • IRATA Level 1: entry-level operator qualification level aimed at individuals with little or zero previous experience.
  • IRATA Level 2: intermediate-level course designed for experienced technicians looking to improve their skills and become available for more complex projects.
  • IRATA Level 3: This advanced course is designed for participants with prior training and experience and successful completion makes finishers eligible to supervise teams.

Complete the course assessment

The assessment will be carried out by an IRATA International Assessor and is in two parts; written and practical. Level 1 candidates are required to answer theory questions as well as being able to demonstrate their competency in all Level 1 syllabus tasks. The Assessor will grade the candidate to ensure they carry out all tasks in a safe manner in accordance with the requirements of the certification scheme.

Obtain your IRATA certification

Assessment are verified by IRATA International. On approval, candidates receive a logbook, certificate and card with the expiry date of three years from the date of assessment. The logbook should be used to record working hours and future training. Technician can now practise as IRATA level 1 for a period of three years. Technicians may progress annually to Level 2 & 3 on the accrual of the pre-requisite 1000 on-rope working hours at each level.

Keep your certification current with re-evaluation training

IRATA Technicians are required to take re-validation training and assessment every three years to ensure that they remain current and maintain safe working practices.
